Cats are unique pets, to say the least. Considering how independent they tend to be, many may believe that they require little to no care or supervision if one’s to be kept as a pet. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Although cats have unique personalities and traits compared to dogs, they still require a substantial level of care to be healthy.

One of the many problems cat owners face are flea infestations. Since we’re now in the summer, flea populations will be exploding all across the Rio Grande Valley, especially in the areas near McAllen. How should you go about spotting these pesky insects and what can you do to get rid of them?

Flea problems should never be ignored. Contact Valley Animal Hospital today to learn more about what we can do for your furry loved one!

Spotting an Infestation

One of the most telling signs of a flea infestation is, of course, noticing your cat constantly scratching his or herself. If you’ve spotting your pet doing this very often, then gently examine their fur. If fleas are present, you’ll immediately notice them crawling through or below the fur.

However, it’s important to know that cats will tend to groom the fleas off of their bodies, so if you examine them and spot no fleas, this doesn’t necessarily mean an infestation isn’t present, especially if, like we said before, he/she is constantly licking or scratching. You might also notice your other pets doing the same and may even spot a few fleas jumping throughout the house.

Another sign, although this might signify a more serious flea infestation, involves spotting skin irritations such as crusting around the necks and along the back. Flea eggs and droppings may also be apparent. They appear similar to salt and pepper and will be found on surfaces that your cat usually rests on.

Treatments

Treating a cat flea infestation may take some work and financial investing, but if done correctly and constantly, your cat will greatly benefit from it. This includes:

  • Flea Collars – Although certain brands of flea collars can work in ridding your cat of fleas, most are either ineffective or offer very short-term results. Our vets will be more than happy to recommend specific brands to help your cat.
  • Anti-Flea Sprays – This option may offer only a temporary solution. It’s important to keep in mind that certain sprays may do more harm than good, especially for your pet cat. Overusing a spray or exposing it to your cat’s eyes, ears or nose can result in harm, so check in with us first to determine if this option should be taken.
  • Shampoos – You may be thinking that bathing your cat with flea treatment shampoos is very effective, however, they only offer short-term results as well. If anything, bathing may not even be required now that prescription medications work much more effectively.
  • Topical Prescription Medications – This is perhaps the most effective treatment for feline flea infestations. Our veterinarians are knowledgeable and experienced in using various meds and recommend bringing your feline friend in for a physical to determine which is best for treatment.
