After days and days of mulling it over, you’ve decided to get your very own pet bird. Great! But now it’s time to figure out how you’ll keep your new friend as happy as can be in your home. While the same basic rules in caring for a dog or cat may apply, the specifics for bird-owning can be very different, but don’t let this deter you. In the following two-part series, we’ll teach you how to love and care for your new feathered companion.
At Valley Animal Hospital, we’re ready to help you keep your pet bird strong and healthy! For more information about our bird services, give us a call today.
Love and Attention
The most important factor in pet care, regardless of the species, is attention. While birds spend a big chunk of the day in their cage, they won’t like being left alone and isolated. How should you spend time with your pet bird? The following tips will help:
- Train up – Birds are very intelligent and a large majority of them are trainable for companionship and obedience. If you’re looking to build a bond with your bird while making their care easier, bird training may be just what you’re looking for.
- Play hard – If your pet training hours have paid off and your bird is now as obedient as can be, playtime is a must. Make sure to close all windows in your home, and then bring your bird out to play with his/her favorite toys. If you have a smaller species of bird – canary or finch – it isn’t necessary for them to leave their cage, but a good set of safe toys will surely be appreciated.
